For effective language learning, it is important to choose the right learning model. There are several options: self-study (our teachers began to tell you about it in previous articles), individual study with a teacher (tete-a-tete or via the Internet) and study in groups (mini, medium or large).

Choosing our model

First of all, we start from what we are learning a foreign language for – going abroad or traveling, getting a new job or just for general development.

If you need a foreign language for work, then, of course, to get faster results, you should find a personal teacher. With your own teacher, it is easier to choose a convenient time for studying, they will determine your level of language proficiency and select an effective lesson method.

If you are studying the language to broaden your horizons, then give preference to group classes.

However it is worth considering the nuance when spoken language is required for work. In this case, you can work in “speaking groups”, making them an addition to the main classes. We will talk about the possibility of visiting discussion groups in Lviv in a separate column.

Let’s not forget that the financial side of the issue is also an important factor here. The cost of group classes is much lower than individual classes. Again, it will be cheaper for the wallet to pay tuition for a semester, and not for a separate number of lessons.

Introvert or extrovert?

When choosing a learning model, the student’s temperament plays a considerable role. Introverts who do not like large companies and who find it easier to study alone prefer personal tutors. And extroverts who need live communication and socialization – study in classes. However no one forbids experimenting and changing the usual algorithm of education.

Our students told us what works best for them.

“I tried all three options – group classes, a personal teacher, and self-study. All of them have their pros and cons, Natalka says. – The minus of group classes is the attachment to other people, but more conversational practice, the minus of individual classes is a high price, but a big plus is a personal approach, self-study is the absence of a live teacher who corrects mistakes, but also the absence of costs. Therefore, it is worth betting on what is more relevant and important for you at a certain moment. However, I will note now, based on experience, that the teacher’s presence is still important. You can combine: several lessons with a teacher every month, and the rest of the time – do it yourself.”

“I prefer studying with a tutor, because in each group there are people with different levels of knowledge. Those who grasp the material better may be bored while it’s being explained to others. Again, in a group, you can feel depressed that you are not up to the level of others. Also, the participants have different temperaments, and “choleric upstarts” who often interrupt the teacher can be annoying. That’s why I prefer face-to-face communication with the teacher,” shares her thoughts Yulia.

“I prefer studying in groups, here you can not only practice the “live” language, but also make new friends. It’s always interesting to share thoughts about learning, exchange experiences and work together with people who are just as interested in learning a language as I am,” says Iryna.
