Last time, “JIT.Academy – your online educational platform” began to tell you where to start learning a foreign language. Today we will dwell in more detail on the methods of learning English words.

Cards with words

Flash cards are the easiest and most popular way to learn a foreign language. All you need is paper (or cardboard) and a pen. Words should be combined into topics, marking different topics with different colors for example.

There are several options for making cards:

on one side we write the word in English, on the other – in Ukrainian;

on one side we write the word in Ukrainian, on the other in English and attach a picture that helps us remember the meaning of the word by association;

on one side we write the English word, entering it into a Ukrainian sentence, on the other – its translation in Ukrainian;

another interesting method: we write the word in English on one side, and its definition (synonyms or antonyms) on the other, either in Ukrainian or, for those who are used to it, in English.

Electronic flash cards

Electronic flash cards are an improved version of paper cards. On the Internet, you can find special sites with ready-made selections of cards (for example, https://www.memrise.com/, ). You determine your level of English language proficiency (which, according to the progress of your studies, can be changed) and choose the topics that interest you.

There are several options for training the learned words: choosing a word from four (or two, three) offered, filling in the blanks in sentences and various word games.

Note that you can create such selections yourself – there are resources on the network that will help you with this (https://quizlet.com/create-set).

To get a positive result from studying with cards – paper or electronic – regular training is required. Experts advise to use the so-called interval approach – that is, repetition of words after a certain period (for example, every day, every few days or every week). Also, in order not to stop at what has been achieved, you should change selections to more complex ones after a certain time, and then return to the old words again.

By the way, an alternative form to cards is a notebook-dictionary – again on paper or in electronic form. You can structure it as you like.

Also, for faster learning of complex words, you can write them on stickers and attach them, for example, at home on your desktop, refrigerator or mirror. In addition, you can mark the interior items to which they are attached on the stickers. In this way, the words will always catch your eye and be etched in your memory.
